The Munch Museum: Munch Becomes "Munch"

Edvard Munch's art is the most significant Norwegian contribution to the history of art, and he is the only Norwegian artist who has a decisive influence on European art trends, above all as a pioneer of Expressionism. This autumn and winter a new exhibition at the Munch Museum will show Munch's artistic career from the early 1880s until he was seen as an established and mature artist in the 1890s.
Edvard Munch

Becoming an Artist

When Edvard Munch (1863-1944), aged 17, decided to become an artist, nobody could have predicted his later position as world famous. This exhibition would like to investigate into the experiences and the choices he made and how they formed him. How did an extremely talented and ambitious young man find the way to develop an individual expression and identity in a time when artistic individuality and originality were identified with geniality? Which strategies did Munch use to establish his identity, both in his expression and in his role as an artist?

The Museum have chosen the focus on the establishment of Munch's artistic identity to mark the publishing of the complete catalogue of all Munch's painted works. This extensive project is being managed by a team of researcers at the Munch Museum, headed by Senior Curator Gerd Woll. The project is in partnership with Gallery Kaare Berntsen, Oslo, and Gallery Faurschau, Copenhagen. The important and impressive display of Munch's works in the exhibition will celebrate this significant publication of Munch's painted oeuvre.
